Paw and Order: The Charm of Hudson & Rex

The buddy cop genre is a classic. Movies and TV have been chasing that formula for ages. Today, let me bark at you about the Canadian TV series Hudson & Rex. This show puts a canine twist on this breed of storytelling by teaming up the human detective with a dog detective who uses more than just his nose to solve crimes.

Hudson & Rex stars Diesel vom Burgimwald as Rex, a bad-ass German Shepherd, and his co-star, human actor John Reardon, as Hudson.

Rex, Detective Hudson, and the rest of the team—Superintendent Donovan, accomplished forensic scientist Dr. Sarah Truong, and tech whisperer Jesse Mills—make a great pack, solving crimes in the scenic city of St. John’s, Newfoundland. Still, the real star of the show is Rex. I mean, can they solve crimes without him?

SPOILER AHEAD: They cannot.

If your idea of a treat is a gritty police procedural, Hudson & Rex may not be for you.

The canine superstar steals the spotlight with max screen time. I mean, more screen time than a tennis ball at a fetch tournament! More screen time than fleas at the beach! More screen time than dog hair on The Human’s couch!

Rex is not just sniffing around in the background—he’s solving crimes and giving his human partner some serious competition in the charisma department. Rex has a nose for hard to find clues, crazy-quick reflexes, and a loyalty that can only come from man’s best friend. On top of all that, he’s an expert in canine parkour.

TV shows don’t often get better in later seasons, but this series does just that. The music improves, and the production values are noticeably better as the series progresses.

“He’s not my dog. He’s my partner.”
— Detective Hudson

Whether he’s chasing down bad guys (every episode), sniffing out clues, or jumping through car windows like an action hero, Rex proves that dogs are the GOAT when it comes to fighting crime.

I’m Gus, your canine critic, and I give Hudson & Rex a solid Fetch it rating. Jump high and catch this one.

May your nose be true, may your treats be plentiful, and may you catch the rabbit of your dreams.

And remember: dogs are people too!
